Piping and structures for cogeneration at Cargill

After a successful collaboration on the Cargill site in Izegem, CallensVyncke once again calls on Lybover METAL for the design and installation of all piping and structures for a new cogeneration plant, this time for Cargill Ghent.

CallensVyncke is the specialist for integrated gas-fired CHP (combined heat and power plants) installations and is responsible for the study, design and installation. Many companies need both electricity and heat for their production process, but do not use this energy efficiently. Their electricity comes in via the grid and they produce the heat locally using gas or electricity. In a CHP, however, both forms of energy (electricity and heat) are generated with gas at the same time. CallensVyncke uses gas turbines to generate electricity and capture the residual heat to produce process steam.

Who do we find in the customer portfolio of CallensVyncke? Industrial companies that continuously have a high steam and electricity consumption such as food group Cargill. Cargill supplies food, agricultural, financial and industrial products and services to the whole world and has several branches in Belgium. Their new, high-performance cogeneration installation allows them to make smarter use of production energy.

Successful cooperation repeated

Lybover METAL has worked with CallensVyncke on several occasions in the past. After a successful collaboration on the Cargill site in Izegem, Lybover METAL was again contracted for the realisation of the new CHP installation on the Cargill site in Ghent. The project in Ghent included a gas turbine, boilers, piping and structures. Lybover METAL designed and installed all piping and structures on the basis of a separate engineering assignment. Platforms and hoisting beams were provided in the CHP building to enable maintenance to be carried out on the installation. Two piperacks, to the left and right of the building, distribute the produced steam and electricity to the production areas. In addition to steam and electricity, the piperacks also distribute other piping required for the operation of the CHP installation. Finally, a large staircase was installed on the outside of the building to allow access to the roof.

High standards and safety requirements

All parties involved in this project attach great importance to quality and safety. In addition to the usual European standards, Cargill had even stricter requirements. And these have an impact on the stability calculation, as well as on the overall design of all structures. Thanks to the internal design and drawing office, Lybover METAL was able to guarantee the necessary flexibility in the event of modifications. Moreover, the previous cooperation and the dedicated team at Lybover METAL meant that all parties were already well attuned to each other.
